CAMM Metals Leverages Technology and Expertise to Fabricate Large Enclosures

One of our sweet spots here at CAMM Metals involves the fabrication of large enclosures. These components can be as large as 12’ x 5’ x 5’ with a material thickness of approximately 1/4”. They are crafted from mainly stainless steel, aluminum, or carbon steel. The typical end use of these enclosures is computer cabinets, though their precise application varies – whether indoors or outdoors, in close proximity to chemicals or corrosive elements, and so on.

At CAMM Metals we are confident in our ability to produce these large enclosures efficiently and with superior quality.

Sophisticated Software

CAMM Metals utilizes top-of-the-line office technology to engineer the components with accuracy and precision. Our team uses Autodesk Inventor to ensure proper fit and function.

We begin by manipulating the customer model using our 3D CAD software. Because these cabinets are typically comprised of multiple pieces that get welded together, it’s important that we can view all sides of the enclosure. That way, we can ensure everything will fit together and work the way it is intended to. In an instance where the 3D model shows some discrepancies, our team uses the software to make adjustments, such as changing the location of certain features, making a part thicker or thinner, or altering dimensions.

Identifying potential issues before we start the fabrication process ensures that production runs smoothly, without hiccups or delays.

End Use Expertise

In addition to working with 3D CAD models, the CAMM Metals team takes the time to fully understand the intended end use of large enclosures before we move forward with production. The precise application may impact our particular services. For example, if an enclosure will be in close proximity to salt water, our team may provide guidance on choosing the right grade of stainless steel for superior corrosion resistance. Or if this component will be in an application with a lot of chemicals, our team might recommend 316 stainless steel, as this material has excellent chemical resistance.

No matter your end use, be sure to share as much information as possible with our team to ensure these enclosures meet your precise needs.

Advanced Equipment

Our team wouldn’t be able to produce large components with exceptional precision and speed without the robust machines on our shop floor. We can handle these large enclosures thanks to the following in-house capabilities:

Laser Cutting Services

large enclosures

In the past, our team produced these large components using a waterjet. This was not ideal when cutting aluminum and steel pieces that were prone to rusting. Additionally, performing this same task with a waterjet proved to be slower than we had hoped for.

We now leverage our laser cutting services instead, producing high-quality enclosures up to 60” by 120” much more efficiently and with less risk.

Metal Forming and Bending

Our highly efficient press brakes are capable of bending pieces up to ¼” thick and 10 feet long, making them ideal for producing large metal enclosures.

Welding Services

After laser cutting and bending, our team moves these pieces over to our welding station. We produce custom welding fixtures in-house to ensure optimal precision. Our team fixtures these large pieces onto the table, folds them square, tacks the parts together, and measures and inspects the piece to ensure everything is properly situated before proceeding with our MIG or TIG welding services

In-House Assembly

There are certain services our team will send parts out to our trusted vendors for – including anodize, chem film, plating, silkscreening, and powder coating – but we handle all part assembly under one roof. We oversee each step, including assembling doors or windows, weatherproofing with gaskets, attaching hinges or lifting hooks. Essentially, we take care of everything needed to transform a basic box into a fully functional cabinet.
